two-story house. At that time, the house was heated by a very inefficient gravity driven coal furnace that had been converted to gas. The heating bill for October-November of 1978 was over $200. That's a lot of money even today; in 1978 it seemed astronomical. Ron decided to take out the fireplace insert he had installed early in 1978, and he installed a Fuego III woodburning fireplace insert by El Fuego Fireplaces into his home. He and his family kept the fire burning when they were at home, and the following months saw heating bills of less than $100 per month.
Ron was astonished and very pleased at the difference in his heating bills. He was sold on the efficiency and beauty of the Fuego III fireplace insert. The other brands he had tried were not negligible in their heat output, but he was so impressed by the performance of the Fuego III that from that time until El Fuego went out of business he did not sell any other brand of fireplace insert.
The fireplace inserts manufactured by Fuego Flame are very similar, in some ways improved, to those produced by El Fuego. Since 1978, more than 30 years, as an independent small business owner, Ron sold and installed many hundreds of very efficient El Fuego and Fuego Flame fireplace inserts and zero clearance fireplaces; he personally installed over 500 El Fuego and Fuego Flame fireplace inserts, and uses Fuego Flame brand in his own home.
Ron decided to retire in early 2010. His daughter, Jen Simmerman, built and maintained this website and worked for Ron on ebusiness aspects of Action Fireplace since 2002 and owns JaElle Enterprises LLC. Ron has graciously agreed to continue with ActionFireplace.com in the capacity of Senior Consultant.
Actionfireplace.com is continuing as a part of JaElle Enterprises LLC.
Tom has been working with Action Fireplace for several years in various aspects of the company, including the installation of fireplace inserts. The Fuego Flame fireplace is a fixture in Tom's home as well.

Ron, Founder of Action Fireplace, first went into business in 1978. He had a shop in Independence, MO. The van pictured above was his work van.
Ron installed an
El Fuego Zero Clearance Fireplace in the van and drove to his appointments around town with the fire burning in the side of his van as a way of advertising his business. It worked. Thirty years later, we still get comments on that van!
When told that a traditional masonry fireplace did not produce enough heat, Glenn Haege, America's Master Handyman, responded by saying "You should install a Fuego Flame Fireplace Insert."

History: In the early to mid 1970s, there was an energy crisis of sorts. Heating costs were going up, there were long lines at gas stations: everyone was looking for ways to cut fuel usage. Ron Phillips, the founder of Action Fireplace, had already started selling and installing various brands of fireplace inserts and free-standing wood burning stoves; he even tried some of them in his own home. The turning point for him came in 1978.
In 1978, Ron and his family lived in a big, old, drafty
